Why the Ferry has a winter break
For many visitors, the South Sands Ferry is one of the highlights of a trip to Salcombe. The short crossing between Salcombe and South Sands offers spectacular views of the estuary and provides a memorable way to travel.
If you're planning a visit during the winter months, however, you may notice that the ferry is not operating. Like many passenger ferry services in coastal destinations around the UK and Europe, the South Sands Ferry takes an annual winter break.
So why does this happen?
Weather and Sea Conditions
The most obvious reason is the weather.
While Salcombe enjoys some beautiful winter days, the months between November and March often bring stronger winds, heavier rain, rougher seas and shorter daylight hours. Passenger ferries are naturally more affected by adverse weather conditions than they are during the calmer summer season.
Operating a ferry service safely is always the first priority. Winter weather can increase the likelihood of cancellations and disruptions, making it more difficult to provide the reliable service that passengers expect.
Visitor Numbers Are Much Lower
Salcombe is one of the UK's most popular coastal destinations during spring, summer and early autumn. During these months, thousands of visitors enjoy the beaches, coastal walks, watersports and harbour activities that make the area so special.
Winter is a different story.
Like many seaside destinations, visitor numbers reduce significantly outside the main tourism season. Studies of ferry and maritime transport show that passenger demand to leisure and resort destinations is highly seasonal, with the vast majority of journeys taking place during the warmer months.
The South Sands Ferry is designed to serve this seasonal demand, operating when most people want to use it.
Essential Maintenance Takes Place During Winter
Every commercial passenger vessel requires regular inspection, servicing and maintenance.
The winter period provides the ideal opportunity to carry out these important works. Engines, safety equipment, hulls, seating and other onboard systems can all be thoroughly checked, maintained and upgraded while the ferry is out of service.
This annual programme helps ensure the ferry remains safe, reliable and ready to welcome passengers when the new season begins.
Looking After Our Team
Operating a ferry service requires experienced skippers and crew who work outdoors in all conditions.
The quieter winter period provides an opportunity for training, certification updates, maintenance work and annual leave, helping ensure the team is fully prepared for the busy months ahead.
A Tradition Shared by Ferry Operators Across the UK
The South Sands Ferry is far from unique in taking a seasonal break.
Many ferry operators serving holiday destinations reduce services or suspend routes during the winter months. This allows them to carry out vessel maintenance, manage operating costs responsibly and ensure services remain sustainable for the long term.
Looking Forward to Spring
Although we're always a little sad to see the season end, the winter break helps ensure that the South Sands Ferry is ready to return each year in the best possible condition.
When spring arrives and the estuary begins to come alive once again, we'll be back on the water, ready to welcome residents and visitors aboard for another fantastic season on the Salcombe waterfront.
Our next scheduled winter break will start on 31st October 2026.
